You will find Casa Buena Vista by walking down the sleepy, flower-lined streets to the edge of the village. Once you are met by no more houses, and the view opens up to its full glory, you have arrived.
While simple and traditional, the kitchen, lounge, and fireplace represent the hearth – or heart – of the home. In winter, there are always olive logs burning. The room is cozy in winter and cool in summer. Also open to the kitchen is the dining area. The rustic table faces the food prep area, making the chef the center of everything – just as it should be.
Through to the back, on the other side of the fireplace, is the master bedroom. Cool in summer, thanks to Moroccan-style black-out shutters and walls that are two feet thick, and warmed in winter by the domed wall that is the back of the fire, this room provides all you need to sleep well and late. Traditional features, quaint furnishing, and plenty of storage supply all you'll need.
Off the dining area is the Terraza and the view of a lifetime. With an unobstructed panorama of the mountains, the valley, the Mediterranean, and (on clear days) the Atlas Mountains, the terraza never disappoints. Even on cloudy days, Bubion is usually above them, turning the view into a surreal, roiling ocean of clouds lapping at the hills below. Under the shade of the grapevine, the Terraza is where we always want to be.
Without a doubt, this is the quirkiest nook we have ever seen. We are told that, traditionally, this is where farm animals were kept. So, in keeping with tradition, it's where we throw the kids when they visit – and they LOVE it. While it has low ceilings at the near end (which slant upward by the time you reach the bed) and with one wall that is part of the mountainside, it is cool and quiet, maintaining a stable temperature all year round.
The main bathroom contains a toilet, shower, bath, large vanity, and large sink. It should be remembered that this is not city living. Nonetheless, it’s perfectly functional and clean and does what a bathroom should do. The second bathroom is where things get cozy, as it also contains the washing machine. Yeah, it's tight, but better to have the second toilet than not! And there is plenty of storage in the hallway.
The terraza doesn't just provide incredible views down the valley during the day; it also provides a sublime, upwardly mesmerizing star-gazing spot after sunset. Thanks to the clear mountain air, high altitude, and the lounger, there is not an evening that goes by without shooting stars, satellites, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter putting on a dazzling display for us.
